2024 Detroit-Toledo Road Trip

At one point years ago when we first retired and had infinite free time on our hands, my husband Rich and I planned a “Rust Belt” road trip that would see us driving across the geographical region from New York State through the Midwest that was dominated by manufacturing.  The multi-week excursion would have taken us on a circular loop from Toronto to Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo, and Detroit and back again.  Coincidentally, each of these cities also have impressive Art galleries, which was a major draw for us.  Also of interest is the fabulous architecture found in several of the cities including Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Detroit, where majestic skyscrapers and other heritage buildings dating back to the late 19th Century to early 20th Century were never torn down as these cities never had urban renewal projects  in the 50s-70s.  Today, the buildings are historical gems and national treasures that are well worth visiting.  This ambitious and extended trek never happened but through the years, we did portions of the loop on separate vacations.  We have visited Buffalo multiple times since 2012, went to Cleveland in 2017 and last year in 2023, we toured Pittsburgh.

This year, we are completing the last leg of the loop by taking a road trip to Windsor, Ontario, then on to Detroit, Dearborn, Ann Arbor, and Northville in Michigan as well as Toledo, Ohio.  The Detroit Art Institute (home of a magnificent mural by Diega Rivera), an architectural tour of downtown and midtown Detroit and a visit to the Henry Ford Museum and house are all on the itinerary for Detroit.  We will also check out the art museums in Ann Arbor and Toledo.
