Paris 2010: Montparnesse
Flying the redeye to Paris, getting about 2-3 hours sleep on the plane, landing at 10:15am Paris time and then trying to stay up for the rest of the day can be exhausting. We made it until around 4pm before we had to take a nap. The homeswap apartment is quaint with a nice little garden area, but small compared to Toronto standards. We would have to get rid of more than half our current belongings if we were ever to move here!
The Montparnesse area where our apartment is (in the 14th arr.) is charming and much more residential than the tourist areas that we frequented on our last visit. While there are still stores and cafes, there are also parks, playgrounds, supermarkets and pharmacies. We found a large supermarket to get some staples and brought home a meal consisting of camenbert cheese in a bagette, mushroom quiche, a hotdog (Rich has been hankering for this since the last trip!) and Paris Brest (chestnut cream filled pastry) and chocolate almond croissant for dessert.
It turns out that it is "sale" month in Paris so all the stores have much of their merchandise on sale (or "solde" in french). To get ready for our trip, we watched the movie "Before Sunrise" where Ethan Hawke and Julie Depry walked and talked all through Paris. She mentioned the sale month so it's rather exciting to be here taking part in it. I'm not much of a shopper but so many bargain opportunities may be difficult to resist.
